Welding Rod Disease

Excessive exposure to manganese fumes
in welding rod can cause a variety of injuries,
including tremors and other movement disorders that
resemble Parkinson's disease. The damage caused by
exposure to manganese is often permanent and gets
worse over time. Welding rod disease is very serious.
Welders can be injured when
they inhale small airborne particles of manganese. The
manganese particles travel from the lungs into the
bloodstream and then across the blood-brain barrier.
Once in the brain, manganese damages nerve cells that
control muscle movement.
The Symptoms of welding rod disease associated with inhalation of
manganese welding rod fumes include slowing of
movement, arms that do not swing when walking,
tremors, delays in performing routine tasks, mask-like
or blank face, mumbling speech, lack of energy and
difficulty sleeping.
Lagarde Law Firm represents hundreds of current
and former welders who have suffered injuries due to
manganese exposure, including workers diagnosed with
Parkinson's disease who are actually suffering from manganism
or welding rod disease.
